Thomas Jonathan “T.J.” Cornett, 87, of Centerville, formerly Papalote, died Tuesday, July 23, 2013, in Centerville.

Mr. Cornett was born Nov. 26, 1925, in Odem to Bartley James and Jessie Beatrice (Nichols) Cornett. He was raised in Papalote and was a farmer and rancher on the same land on which he grew up. He served in the U.S. Army in Europe during WWII and was later called back to active duty during the Korean War. He was a master sergeant and drill sergeant. He earned numerous awards during his service in the Army including a Silver Star, Bronze Star, Presidential Unit Citation and a Combat Infantryman Badge.

In later years, he worked as a real estate broker. He also worked as a jailer for the Bee County Sheriff’s Department. He was a past master of the Beeville Masonic Lodge #261 and a deacon of the Papalote Baptist Church. He had lived the past two-and-a-half years in Centerville and was a member of the North Creek Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife of almost 60 years, Geneva Cornett of Centerville; two sons, Scott (Debra) Cornett, of Calallen and Larry (Libby) Cornett of Centerville; a daughter, Judy (Terry) LeBlanc of Plano; five grandchildren, Jason Cornett, Jeffrey Cornett, Travis Cornett, Whitney Cornett and Trevor LeBlanc; and two great-grandchildren.

A graveside service was held at 10 a.m. Friday, July 26, at the North Creek Cemetery in rural Leon County. There was no public visitation.
