“Since I was a little girl in the stands watching the rodeos I always just loved and admired the lady who would carry the American flag during the national anthem and would always think that will be me one day,” Lee said.
Last October Lee decided it was time to start a team in South Texas.
Filled With inspiration from her mother who was a member of a Sheriff’s Mounted Posse Drill Team and help from friend and mentor Jada Wiley, founder of the Bellville Heritage Cowgirls, Lee began to form her own drill team.
The first tryouts saw only six riders show up. The number quickly grew to 12 and now the team stands at 16.
The drill team had their first performance at the 2013 LOC Fair.
“I have to give thanks to God because starting this team wasn’t the easiest thing I’ve ever done,” Lee said. “I have some awesome ladies on my team and we are all so close, we never begin a performance or practice without praying before.”
The team can be seen before performances gathered in a circle sharing a prayer.
It was this prayer that lead to the team’s motto “Our team that prays together stays together.”
The team is always looking to grow Lee said, the rider must have experience, must have their own horse and transportation, be at least 18 or have parents in attendance at all times.
The team recently held a benefit team roping to assist with the cost of liability fees, uniforms, and tack.
Local team ropers and residents came out to support the drill team by participating in the roping, silent auction and purchasing food from Big Lou’s Cookin’ Crew on June 28.
The benefit was a success, earning $2,292.50, but donations are always needed to cover the unseen expenses such as liability fee’s and the team is open to sponorship.
The team’s next performance will be at the Tilden Rodeo in September. Lee added that if anyone is interested in having the team open for their event, they would love to be there to perform.
