Caron Vela started as the new director of that office on June 12, and she’s been appearing at meetings around City Hall.
“I live in Kingsville,” the St. Louis, Mo., native said last week.
She spent her early childhood living in Memphis, Tenn., but moved to McAllen with her family when she was 14.
“I call McAllen home,” Vela said. She graduated from McAllen High School back when the city only had one high school. She married Rudy, the sweetheart she met when she was a student there.
After that, Vela got her bachelor’s degree in accounting at Texas A&I University in Kingsville in 1989.
In 2011, Vela earned her master of business administration degree from the Keller Graduate School of Management. The school is part of the DeVry University system.
Vela has worked for city governments for years. She went to work with the City of Kingsville in 2001 and left in August 2012. She took a job with the City of Corpus Christi and kept that position until this year.
The new finance director has spent years working with the Incode, the same accounting computer software the city uses here.
When she is not sitting behind a desk crunching numbers, Vela likes to walk and play with her grandchildren.
Two girls and a boy call her grandma. Her 26-year-old son lives in Kingsville and her 29-year-old daughter lives in San Antonio.
