Jesus then told the parable of the good Samaritan to explain to this "scholar of the law" the meaning of "who is my neighbor". By telling a story about a Samaritan who did the right thing when other experts in the law like the priest and the Levite didn't, Jesus made it clear that it doesn't take years of study to know how to love God and love our neighbor. It just takes the courage and humility to do what is right. Our neighbor is precisely the one who has a greater need than we do in the present moment. Our neighbor is not the person most like us, not the person we love best, and not even the person who will repay us the favor. Jesus reminds the favor-seeking lawyer that those who help others do so because they have not lost touch with their own need for help. Jesus final words are "Go and do likewise."
