Sue Benson MSN, FNP-BC (Family Nurse Practitioner-Board Certified) has joined the staff of Karnes Community Health Center (KCHC) as a full-time Family Nurse Practitioner. Ms. Benson is a graduate of the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. Monty Small, Chief Executive Officer for Atascosa Health Center, Inc. the parent organization for KCHC, said: “We are grateful to have Sue working at our Karnes clinic. She is a highly respected and experienced nurse practitioner.” Nurse practitioners hold advanced nursing degrees and provide care under the supervision of a physician.

Ms. Benson is a recipient of the National Health Service Corps (NHSC) education loan for health professionals including physicians and dentists. The NHSC program makes it possible for nurses like Ms. Benson to dedicate their careers to working in areas of the United States with limited access to care. Karnes County has been designated as a Health Professional Shortage Area and qualifies for NHSC loan recipients. Ms. Benson is one of nearly 10,000 clinicians across the country that provides care in underserved rural or urban areas. Ms. Benson stated that “she was happy to be joining the staff of the Karnes Community Health Center (KCHC). The KCHC has great community support, accreditation from The Joint Commission’s ambulatory care program and, is working towards designation as a Patient Centered Medical Home (PCMH). We all know these are challenging times in health care but, at the end of the day, it is what you did as a health professional for each patient that counts.”

Ms. Benson has 30 years of nursing experience in hospital sittings, private practice and other community health centers. She returned to Texas about 13 years ago after living in Alaska for 20 years. Ms. Benson lives in Floresville and has two grown children and grandchildren.
