The preliminary plat for the subdivision in George West required a name change before final approval can be made at the next meeting because “George West Ranch Subdivision” was already taken. Concerns were also discussed regarding firearm use on the properties.
Live Oak County Judge Jim Huff said the 10-acre plots probably fall within the state requirements for firearm use and the commissioners would seek legal counsel in the coming weeks.
“There’s nobody in this room that shoots more than I do and that’s a right everyone’s entitled to, but when there’s a safety issue and there’s not a lot of tracts in there and you get someone who doesn’t know what they’re doing then you got a problem,” Commissioner Willie James said. “Once the bullet goes across the property line, then it’s violating the law.”
Huff said complication arise when trying to remove the right to shoot on property once it has already been purchased, but it’s not as difficult when the property is purchased with the buyer knowing those restrictions apply.
The commissioners also read and accepted bids for the Old Marbach School WSC water improvements project under the TxCDBG Colonia Grant #712035. This project would use 9,000 feet of pipeline and would give additional houses the option to tap into the line.
“It’s a pretty depressed area,” James said. “Two individuals don’t have water at all.”
The lowest bid read was from A+ Waterworks in Arlington for $197,201 but no start date or completion time was listed.
The commissioners also authorized applying for Texas Community Development Block Grant Program after speaking with Lyndon Nance of Land Surveying Inc. from San Antonio. If the grant is awarded it would bring septic systems to 32 houses near Lake Corpus Christi in an effort to keep sewage from getting into the lake.
