Friday Night Lights shone on football fields all across South Texas for a different reason at this time of year. Graduation 2013 was underway. As the sun settled and the breezes blew, Pettus ISD said goodbye not only to the graduating class of 2013 but to two of their most beloved teachers.

Johnny and Norma Proffitt have dedicated their lives to teaching children. Johnny is retiring with 31 years in education, 25 of those at Pettus ISD. His wife, Norma, retired after 33 years in education. She has been educating children at Pettus Elementary for 30 years. A retirement party, attended by the faculty and staff of the district, was held in their honor on Friday, May 31. Their daughter, Stacy DelBosque, also a teacher at Pettus Elementary, tearfully read a tribute to her parents.

“I only hope I can be half the teacher you were and that my students love me as much as yours love you,” Stacy said.

As a tribute to all the proms, extracurricular activities, student events and pep rallies, Johnny and Norma shared one last dance at Pettus ISD.
