REFUGIO – The Refugio City Council met in a specially called meeting Tuesday morning, June 4, to change the method of payment to the mayor and council members.

The method has been to pay the council members and mayor mid-month for the entire month.

But, now, upon its unanimous vote, the council approved council members being paid the first of the month for the previous month.

And the mayor now will be paid on the 15th of every month for the previous two weeks and again on the first the month for the previous two weeks.

The council also introduced Mike Morris, the city’s new city attorney, who is based in Corpus Christi.

Morris said he has done municipal work for years and his current main clients are Port Aransas, Ingleside and Driscoll.

“I want to give you the best advice I can,” he said.

He said he understood that attorney fees were expensive so he would “try to economize to the extent (he) could.”

A discussion of municipal court proceedings and scheduling ensued among Morris, the city council, and Municipal Judge Gary Bourland.

Morris was contracted by the hour with the stipulation that both the city and the attorney have options to withdraw from the contract at any point.

Mayor Joey Heard informed that the former city attorney Don Kubicek was not reappointed.
