In Beeville there's always lots of construction and demolition going on. Well, back when these photos were taken there was. Both buildings are unnamed and unknown.

I can speak to the first photo. The solid concrete home, located in Blueberry Hills was in process of being erected by my father Bascom Nelson and his partner Robert Pohl. Note the sign off to the right-hand side. The building was funded by the O.E.O. I'm not certain, but I believe the acronym stood for Office of Equal Opportunity. The time of this photo would have been around 1971. The impressive point about the building, however, was that the walls were put up in a day. This was accomplished by a telescoping, hydraulic jig designed by my dad and visible to the right of the building. The mandate of the grant-funded project was to develop a means of standardizing the construction of affordable, quality housing that would be accessible to anyone. Affordable housing was a passion of my father's throughout his life. Unfortunately, O.E.O. was de-funded a short time after. Until his death from terminal pancreatic cancer in August of 1991, Bascom would periodically survey the occupants of the house. To a one, they would concur the home he built and designed was not only easy to live in but very energy efficient -- warm in the winter and cool in the summer -- a point of fact that always pleased him.

Bascom Nelson and Robert Pohl would go on to open Universal Fabricators, Inc. which served South Texas, NASA and the US Navy with specialized metal construction and design for over 20 years.
