Self help is a big industry in our country. We purchase materials that will help us gain physical strength, obtain financial security, improve our brains, make better decisions, fix up our homes, .....Why is it that we spend so much time and money on those things and spend so little time and effort so that we can increase our faith in our Lord Jesus Christ. Do we think faith is something that does not need nurturing? Faith is a belief and trust in and loyalty to God with strong conviction. How do others perceive our faith? Is our faith said only or lived out in our lives as well?

In the Gospel lesson from the seventh chapter of Luke a Roman centurion who was a believer sought out Jesus to heal his servant. The centurion's faith was especially amazing because he was a Gentile who had not been brought up to know a loving God. This centurion came to Jesus because he believed Jesus was sent from God. Apparently the centurion recognized that the Jews possessed God's message for mankind--it is recorded that he loved the nation and built the synagogue. Thus, in his time of need, it was natural for him to turn to Jesus.

Just as this centurion humbled himself before Jesus, we too can only stand humbly before God. In truth, none of us is worthy or unworthy of what God gives. In Christ we encounter the healing and forgiveness of God. We come to be made whole. Ours is the faith of the centurion:"only speak the word" and we will know healing. Christ does speak the word of grace, love, and forgiveness.

Exercise your faith and make it strong. Reach out to one person in need at a time. Be a Christian not just in word but in your life as well. Exercise your faith by using it so that the world will know.

Grant us patience in our faith in the Lord so that in the good times and the bad, we stay focused on you. Amen.
