After Adam had seen and named all the different species of creatures, the Lord brought forth woman. Our English language does not do justice to Adam’s response. His words, “bone of my bone” can more fully be translated: “This creature is flesh of my flesh, and bone of my bones; therefore shall she be called womb-man because she was taken out of man. She is the mother of all life.”

Eve was to be the mother of all human beings. Through great misery, life would change because of sin, and death would reign universally. But, through child birth, man and woman would populate the world. And in the fullness of time, One would be born who would destroy death and bring life and immortality to light. (See 2 Timothy 1:10)

The Hebrew language defines “mother” as “the bond of the family”. With the birth of a child comes the duty of child rearing. A true mother is connected to her children through an interaction of love experiences – nourishing, training, disciplining, and the enjoyment of companionship. “Motherhood” is not a biological or blood connection. It means loving a child – sharing God’s love and wisdom, which gives life.

A mother chooses to love life. She gains honor through her children’s respect, her husband’s praises, and her internal knowledge that she has nourished her children with love. Her devotion, love, and life are poured out into her children as she discerns what each child needs. She sees herself in her child, and through her loving and nurturing spirit, she has her child’s ear and heart.

Proverbs 31 is a parable for understanding the life of mother. She makes righteous judgments (vv. 1-9); her value is defined (vv. 10-14); she cares for her family unit (vv. 15-19); she helps the needy (vv. 20-25); and she speaks wisdom (vv. 26-31).

Every child has the need to receive wisdom and understand the consequences of justice and judgment that will be needed in life. A mother’s wisdom personifies her life and actions, which speak louder than words. A Christ-like mother is God’s representative to her children, pointing them to their need for Christ.

“Her children arise and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her: ‘Many women do noble things, but you surpass them all.’ Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised. Give her the reward she has earned, and let her works bring her praise at the city gate.” (Proverbs 31:28-31)
