Pentecost Sunday was celebrated at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Runge at the worship services Sunday, May 19th. The Bible records the Pentecost in Acts 2:1-13:"When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability. ..."

Pentecost which occurs 10 days after the Ascension of Jesus Christ marks the day when the Holy Spirit descended upon the Apostles. Pentecost fulfills Jesus' promise to send one "Counselor" and "Spirit of Truth" as recorded in John 16:4-15. Pentecost launches the large-scale spreading of the Gospel after Jesus' ascension. Acts 2:41 records that after Peter spoke to the crowd after receiving the Holy Spirit, some 3000 people were baptized.

As believers of Jesus Christ, we are never alone. God is always with us, always seeking something better for us. Christ has given us the gift of the Holy Spirit and the Holy Spirit always points us to Christ and will guide us to stay on the narrow path that leads to Christ. The Spirit is the dynamic, life-enhancing connection between Jesus and his followers, keeping them in the truth of God's loving purpose revealed in Jesus.

Spirit-filled truth is not primarily doctrinal or emotional; it is incarnational. The Spirit of truth will live with us, and in us, just as Jesus has become truly human and lives among us. The Spirit brings forgiveness and renewal as we confess our failings, honestly and humbly acknowledging the truth about our broken lives. The Spirit fills us with peace and abundant life as we eat the truth of Christ's body broken for the wholeness of the world. The Spirit sends us to make known the one who is Truth, the Word made human, Jesus Christ.

Come Holy Spirit fill the hearts of your faithful and kindle in us the fire of your love. Send forth your spirit and we should be created, and you should renew the face of the earth. O God, who by the light of the Holy Spirit instructs the hearts of the faithful, grant by the same Holy Spirit that we may be truly wise and ever rejoice in his consolations. Through Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen.
