REFUGIO – On Friday, April 12, the Refugio Bobcat baseball team was looking to clinch its 2nd consecutive district championship. They also put their undefeated district record (10-0) and #6 state ranking on the line. The Goliad Tigers came into town right in the middle of the playoff hunt as they sat one game out of 2nd place.

Travis Quintanilla took the mound for the Bobcats and looked to extend his undefeated record (8-0). The Tigers thought otherwise and quickly strung together a couple hits to take a 1-0 lead. The Bobcats answered back with four runs of their own in the bottom of the 1st inning. Colton Carroll and Draigon Silvas each had key hits in the inning. As Quintanilla settled in on the mound the Cats continued to cushion their lead with three more runs in the bottom of the 2nd inning. JW Shipp had an RBI double and Cameron Loveday drove in two runs with a single up the middle. That would be all the scoring for the evening as the Bobcat’s bats went quiet the rest of the night.

Defensively, the Bobcats had to fight off several Goliad threats to keep the game in hand. In the 4th inning the Tigers scratched across a run to pull within 7-2. Quintanilla’s night on the mound was done after five innings. He gave up four hits and zero earned runs while picking up seven strikeouts. Cole Van Ness came into the game in relief of Quintanilla. In the 6th inning, Van Ness surrendered one unearned run. In the 7th, Van Ness held the Tigers scoreless and sealed the game for the Bobcats by a score of 7-3.

With the win the Bobcats clinched a share of the district title. The Bobcats have three remaining games and a three game lead over 2nd place Aransas Pass. One more win will clinch the title outright. It would be the 2nd consecutive title and 3rd in four years.

“Thank you to all who support the Refugio Athletic Program,” said Coach Huerta.
