Alexis and Tristan Pelitire competed in both the regional and state powerlifting competitions this past month. Both are students at A.C. Jones High School in Beeville. Alexis is a senior and Tristan is a junior.
Alexis competed on March 2 in Weslaco in the Region IV meet. She was among nine lifters at the regional competition in the 165 weight class. Alexis placed sixth with a total of 770 pounds in her three lifts to qualify for state. On March 15, Alexis took part in the state powerlifting competition in Corpus Christi at the American Bank Center. She competed against 11 4A competitors in her weight class and finished the state competition in third place with her best lift total of 835 pounds.
Tristan competed on March 9 in Weslaco for his Region IV meet. He went against 10 other lifters in the regional competition in the 165 weight class, finishing the competition in second place. Tristan also broke a regional powerlifting record that had been set in 1991 in the bench press for 350 pounds. Tristan lifted 360 pounds at this meet to break the 12-year-old record. His second place finish and his total of 1,350 pounds advanced him to the state competition.
On March 23, Tristan competed in the state competition in Abilene. He placed fourth overall in the Division 1 state competition. He competed against all competitors from 4A and 5A schools. Tristan could have easily placed second with a dead lift that he had done hundreds of times of 515 pounds, but indicated, “I didn’t come here for second, I came to win state.”
Tristan needed a dead lift of 555 pounds to win the state title. Although he fell short, and this caused him to fall back into fourth place, he wouldn’t have done it any other way. Tristan made it clear that he had no regrets and that he didn’t want to have any “what ifs.”
He was happy that he went for his last dead lift of 555 pounds, even though he was unable to complete the lift. Once again, Tristan broke another lifting record in the bench press. The old record had been set at 370 pounds in 2009. Tristan set a new state mark of 375 pounds.
Great athletes and great students, they are the children of Lisa (Galvan) and Anthony Pelitire of Beeville and the grandchildren of Joe and Brenda Galvan of Three Rivers.
