“We had our best start this year, but we had a hard time maintaining the intensity. Now, we have to work on being consistent for the entire match,” said head coach Lawrence Lollar.
“We have nine matches left, and we need to finish strong.”
The Cougars played right with the Palominos over the first set before a few late mistakes cost them. Laredo captured the first set 25-17 to take a 1-0 lead in the best of five match.
Set two was all Laredo as the Cougars could not get things back on track after their loss in set two. The Palominos rode off with an easy 25-7 victory for the 2-0 lead.
Set three had the Cougars playing a little better, but they trailed 12-8 midway through the set, and the Laredo women outscored the Cougars 13-3 the rest of the way to capture the final set 25-11.
Kathy Acosta and Shanise Wilson led the CBC offense with four kills each. Mykayla Villarreal followed with three kills over the three sets. Regan Gonzalez set up 13 points for assists. Ronnie Garcia, Wilson and Villarreal each contributed a block for the Cougars. Garcia finished with seven digs on defense, and Lauren Gutierrez came up with six digs. Garcia served the lone Cougar ace in the match.
The loss keeps the Cougars winless in region at 0-5, and they stand 2-15 on the year.
“We play Tyler College and Panola College this weekend on the road and then we are home next Tuesday against Victoria College. We will have our pink-out match (in support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month) on Oct. 18,” Lollar said.
