According to Library Director Claudine Janota, $267,000 of approximately $500,000 in the White family trust fund will be used to renovate and expand the Texas History Room to 1,200 square feet.
The White family stipulated in the trust that it only be used for the Texas History Room. The library received the trust money in 2006.
“They’re working on the permits right now,” Library Janota said. “Site work should start in early October. They hope to have substantial completion around Christmas time and finished by mid-January.”
There will also be a room solely used to store historical archives.
A $46,000 grant from the M.G. and Lillie A. Johnson Foundation will allow renovations and repairs to the library.
“We’re going to repaint and put in new carpeting,” Janota said. “We’ve had some damage from when the roof leaked and some sheetrock we’ll have replaced.”
A Johnson Foundation grant of $58,000 enabled the library to install a new roof in 2010.
“We have some very important documents and history back here,” Janota said. “We’ll be able to keep the riches and heritage of Goliad safe.
“It’s something that has needed to happen for a long time.”
