The Karnes City Home and Garden Club members are busy making plans for their upcoming meetings and special activities beginning this fall. The group meetings will begin on Thursday, Sept. 20 at 2 p.m. in the afternoon and will be held at the El Oso meeting room located right of Hwy 181 between Karnes City and Kenedy.

Our fine organization has members from all over Karnes County. We concentrate on up to date information on at-home needs. One of the many examples would be food preparation and the art of selecting, cleaning and properly preparing fruits and vegetables; a complete report about sugar substitutes was given to us by our county extension agent Meredith Carter. Meredith also gave us very educational information concerning healthy food and beverage consumption. At this time we wish to announce that our organization recently designed our own cookbook, which will be for sale this fall. We credit Marlene Smith for all her hard work and dedication for this project.

In the past, we have had many people come and give us plant and garden advice. These speakers were known to spend a lot of their time with plants and have developed a lot of good ‘common sense’ with their success in growing healthy plants at their homes. We were not privileged to have our own home town expert, Dr. Larry Franke, come and give us a lot of good plant advice.

This fall, we will be giving away really nice read oak trees to those persons present at our group meetings. To date we have 20 seedling trees being taken care of by yours truly.

Our September meeting will highlight a guest speaker who works in our area as a Wesley Nurse and she will speak about wellness, exercise and nutrition.

Our Home and Garden Club is in charge of the Veterans Memorial, Texas Star Memorial, Wreaths Across America and a special tribute to mother from our area given at the annual Mother’s Day Celebration.

Anyone from our area who is interested in joining our organization may call our Treasurer Johnie Hall at 780-3842. The annual dues is $10.00, which is well worth the price for all the educational information you will receive. You will also have the joy of visiting with very welcoming and gracious people at our meetings. Yes, we have both men and women members in our group.

If you have any questions about this news article, please call me at 780-2483.

Thank you! Gladys Janysek
