PETTUS – The Pettus ISD school board on Thursday night selected former Skidmore-Tynan athletic director and head football coach Dan Garza to lead the Eagle athletic department in the coming years.

Garza will replace Steve Marbach as the head football coach for the Eagles. Marbach recently resigned and accepted a position with the Falls City Beavers to head their athletic department and be the head football coach.

Garza has roots in the Pettus area. His daughters have attended school there and his wife, Erica Garza, is the head volleyball coach and a track coach for the Lady Eagles.

“It was a family decision. Pettus is home for me and the family. I coached there back in the ’90s. My wife is a coach there now and my daughters have all gone to school there. It’s home,” Garza said.

The decision was hard for Garza as he has the utmost respect for the administration, staff and the students at Skidmore.

“Everyone there has been great,” Garza said.

Garza has remained close to the Eagles over the last few years and knows the student/athletes that Pettus provides a coach. The Eagles are known for their dedication, hard work and tenacity. A never-give-up attitude takes the Eagles and Lady Eagles a long way.

Garza is already working at Pettus, lining up things for the start of the fall season.

“Dan is a wonderful family man and he has been of great service to the S-T ISD as a principal and as an athletic director,” said S-T Superintendent Dr. Brett Belmarez.

“I am very happy for him and his family.”

The search for Garza’s successor has already begun and since last Friday’s posting for the position, 38 applications have been received.

“It speaks to the quality of the program that coach Garza leaves behind. Hopefully, we will find someone with experience in postseason play that can take us to the next level,” Belmarez said.

The superintendent believes they can have a recommendation for the school board by the next meeting on June 18.
