On Thursday the Kenedy Lions played the Beeville Trojans in the first round of play at the Goliad baseball tournament.

The Lions were to play Beeville and Bloomington but the Bloomington game and Saturday game where cancelled due to weather.

The Lions did however manage to get one game in, in which they won 11-9 over Beeville.

Rolie Zepeda took the mound for the LIons and pitched 4 innings giving up 6 runs on 4 hits.

The Lions would be down after the first inning 2-0 but came back to tie it in the bottom as Zepeda would reach on an error.

Tristan Mejia would walk, followed by Isaac Cruz’s double to drive them both in. In the second Beeville scored 4 runs as Zepeda walked the first two batters followed by a triple.

A error drove in the triple and then would move around to score before Zepeda settled down.

In the third inning the LIons would get two runs back to cut it to 6-4. Zepeda walked, stole second and was singled in by Dominic Cruz. Cruz would advance on the throw to second and then be driven in by his brother Isaac.

In the fourth inning the Lions would score 4 runs with 2 outs as the Trojans had a pitching change in which he walked 5, hit one batter and gave up a hit to Mejia and the Lions took a 8-6 lead.

Mejia would come in to pitch the top of the fifth and get the Trojans three up three down. In the bottom of the inning the Lions would benefit from the Trojans lack of control as Jacob Asebedo would walk and score, Zepeda would walk and score, D. Cruz would drive in one run with his second single and the Trojan right fielder would misplay it and Cruz would get to third.

Mejia would walk and I. Cruz would get his second double to move Mejia to third. RayJ Garza would get plunked for the second time in a row to load the bases but the three runs were all the Lions would get and make it 11-6.

Time Limit was just about up in the game as the Trojans batted in the sixth so all the Lions needed was three outs. Mejia would be able to get the first two but in baseball that last out is usually the hardest to come by and it was in this game.

A double, walk, error, double, and walk would all happen with two outs and plate three runs for the Trojans. The Lions would have to make the pitching change and bring in freshman D. Cruz to close out the game for the save as he struck out the Beeville third basemen for the final out. With the win the Lions improved to 5-0.

It was a good win for the Lions as they played a little tight against the 4A Trojans at the beginning but showed they could play with anyone.

We where to find a Tuesday game with Floresville’s JV in Floresville at 2:30.

Normally we would have played 13 games before district but only having 6 games is going to push the limits before district play as quite a few Lions will be entering with limited experience.

District play opens on Tuesday March 20th in Kenedy against Port Aransas. First game will start at 5:00 followed by the varsity game at 7:00.

On Monday March 5 the Kenedy Lions hosted the Nixon-Smiley Mustangs in a non district baseball game.

The game was moved to Monday from Tuesday due to TAKS testing that was taking place on Wednesday.

The Lions would shake off the rust and then run rule the Mustangs 13-3 in five innings.

Dominic Cruz would pitch three innings to pick up the win and move to 2-0 on the season.

He would give up two earned runs with 4 Lion errors behind him in the three innings and he would leave with a 8-2 lead after three innings.

Rolie Zepeda would pitch the fourth inning and strike out three and walk two.

Tristan Mejia would get a inning in the fifth and give up 1 unearned run on two hits and 1 error to close out the game for the Lions.

The Lions would score 13 runs on 11 hits.

Mejia went 2 for 2 with a triple and 3 runs scored, Isaac Cruz went 3 for 3 with a double and three runs scored, RayJ Garza would also go 2 for 2 with 3 runs scored.

Kris Bryan would be the leading RBI getter as he went 2 for 3 with 4 RBIs.

Zepeda and Eddie Villarreal would both go 1 for 3 each with a triple.
