Lady Badgers win home basketball tournament

Junior Aileen Lundquist was selected All-Tournament MVP Saturday after the Lady Badgers took first in the Karnes City Athletic Booster Club Basketball Tournament.

“We played hard and came out with a lot of intensity and no fear,” Lundquist said. “We came ready to play, and we you come ready, great things happen.

Sophomore Kayla Ramirez and Junior Lani Pitts also were selected to the All-Tournament team, along with Nixon-Smiley’s Kelby Henderson, San Antonio Cole’s Jasmine Brinson, Three Rivers’ Megan Cruz and Odem’s Janissa Perez.

“We played hard and as a team,” Ramirez said. “It came down to who wanted it more, and of course we did.”

Saturday, Dec. 3

The Lady Badgers dominated the seven other teams in the tournament, winning the championship Saturday 53-42 over Stockdale, whom they opened district against Tuesday, Dec. 6. Lundquist scored 16 points, including a three-pointer, while Ramirez added another 11.

“Hard work and determination got us the win,” Lundquist said. “We never gave up and finished the game with a big win.”

Friday, Dec. 2

The Lady Badgers pummeled Pearsall 66-32 to lead up to Saturday’s championship game. Ramirez and Junior Jonie Reyes both scored 11, while Pitts and Junior Khadeshia Hopkins chipped in 8 each. Lundquist had 7.

Thursday, Dec. 1

The Lady Badgers defeated San Antonio Cole 45-36 in the second game of Thursday. Pitts had 16 points to lead all scorers, while Lundquist added another 9.

In their first tournament matchup against Odem, the Lady Badgers won 39-23. Junior Courtney Piepryzca led all scorers with 12, and Ramirez followed with 8.

The JV Lady Badger Basketball team won second in the Goliad tournament over the weekend.

In a pre-district game on Nov. 30 game, the Lady Badgers routed Cuero 50-24.
