Memorial Day marks the beginning of summer vacation season. The Texas Highway Patrol reminds everyone to drive carefully during the holiday weekend.

This year the Texas Department of Public Safety will participate in “Click it or Ticket.” Troopers will step up enforcement of the safety belt law and enforce a zero tolerance to non-compliance.

Texas law requires children under 8 and under four feet nine inches tall to be secured in an approved child safety seat /booster seat according to manufactures instructions.

Another new law already in effect is that all passengers must be buckled up anywhere in the vehicle. The fine for non compliance is $25 to $250 plus court cost.

The highway patrol will have all available troopers on the road and will be especially watchful for safety belt violations and individuals committing hazardous violations, including speeding, passing in no passing zones, following too close, changing lanes erratically and driving under the influence of alcohol and other drugs.

Make the Memorial Day holiday safe by not drinking and driving, driving within the speed limit and and obeying traffic laws. Drive responsibly and always buckle up.
