“The girls played an outstanding game against San Diego. The girls came out in the third quarter and took charge of the game,” said head coach Joseph Grimes.
“Throughout the whole game, the Lady Cats outhustled San Diego which allowed us to get good looks at the basket.”
The Lady Vaqueros jumped out to a 12-8 lead after the first eight minutes but the defense and hustle of the Lady Cats began to wear down the home team. The S-T girls outscored the Vaqueros by four, 15-11, in the second quarter to end the half at 23-23.
The third period was decisive as the Lady Cats pounded the boards and played top-notch defense to gain control. S-T poured in 20 points while holding the Vaqueros to just nine markers. It was a 43-32 contest entering the fourth quarter.
That 11-point lead stretched to 15 by the end of the final quarter with the Lady Cats hitting for 12 points in the fourth. The Lady Vaqueros had entered the contest at 12-2 overall and 2-0 in district.
The Lady Cats improved to 11-4 on the season and stand 3-0 in district play. The S-T girls had four players in double figures with Amber Hughlett and D’Anne Wilder leading the way with 14 points apiece. Celina Acosta and Brittany Garza followed with 10 each in the win. Kathy Acosta added four points and Samantha Minter made three.
The Lady Cats are in McAllen this week for a tournament.
