WOODSBORO – Coming off the heels of their Bye week, the Runge Yellow Jackets started District 14-1A Division II against the Woodsboro Eagles on Friday night. Unfortunately for Runge, Woodsboro utilized their offense and defense to hand the Yellow Jackets a 46-7 loss, their first loss of the season.

“I’m proud of the kids, they never quit,” said Runge head coach Matt Wright. “We had some problems executing. Credit to Woodsboro, they have great kids. I was proud of our kids for playing the entire game.”

Before Runge scored their only touchdown of the game, Woodsboro had a 39-0 lead. Runge got on the scoreboard just a few seconds into the fourth quarter on a run by Jeric Esparza, with Ryan Saucedo adding the extra point. Woodsboro added one more score in the fourth quarter to put the deficit at 46-7.

Statistically, Runge amassed close to 300 yards of total offense, with a majority of it coming from their running game. Woodsboro, by contrast, had over 400 yards of total offense, and, like Runge, had a majority of it come from their ground game.

“Our backs are against the wall, we have to win this week,” said Wright. “If we don’t, it becomes more difficult to get in the playoffs.”

This week, the Yellow Jackets will hope to bounce back in district play as they host the Louise Hornets.

“We’re not going to change a whole lot,” said Wright. “We have to play as a team to win. I expect a lot more focus and to look like we have a purpose. We’re going to make sure we’re not in a situation in the fourth quarter where we can’t win.”

Kickoff in Runge is set for Friday, Oct. 18 at 7:30 p.m.
