Jesus seems to go out of his way to alienate the large crowds that he is attracting on his journey to Jerusalem (and the cross!). He turns to the crowds and issues three impossible conditions in order to be his disciple: hate family and even life itself; pick up the cross and follow him; renounce all of one’s possessions. One cannot carry a cross if one’s hands are busy grasping onto other things. One cannot carry a cross with mixed and divided loyalties. Count the cost. A proper accounting will reveal the following: we cannot; however, God can and does for us what we cannot do for ourselves. What is our response? This week’s “up”: Add it up!

St. Paul’s News and Notes: St. Paul’s participated in God’s Work Our Hands Sunday to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the ELCA. From 8:30-10:15 am, members of St. Paul’s provided “Table of Grace,” in front of the Dollar General: a free continental breakfast and caring conversation for anyone who stopped by. During morning worship the people of St. Paul’s brought forward offerings of canned goods to stock the shelves of the Thrift Center Food Pantry. Following worship the people of St. Paul’s met outside to dedicate the new Play Set. As part of ongoing outreach efforts, the people of St. Paul’s will partner with the Karnes City Schools to provide school supplies and backpacks of food to provide food on the weekends for needy students. Women of St. Paul’s are collecting items for LWR School Kits and for the Physical offering at the Synod WELCA Convention this fall. The first of three Women of St. Paul’s Bake Sales (complete with locally crafted tamales) will be held on Sept. 14 from 8:30 a.m. until sold out at the Kenedy Wal-Mart. All baked good donations are greatly appreciated.
