New judge marginalizing importance of office

The Karnes Countywide has tried to interview Karnes County Judge Barbara Shaw several times over the past several weeks and Judge Shaw has not returned our calls or responded to our emails.

There are many questions that we would like to ask but the county judge has cut off all communication between her office and this newspaper.

We are disappointed in the county judge and her decision not to communicate through this newspaper with the people who elected her to serve in the position of county judge.

As a candidate, she promised to be open and available to any Karnes County resident and she promised to answer any questions anyone asked at any time.

While this newspaper has had disagreements with county judges that preceded Judge Shaw, we never stopped talking with our elected leaders and they never stopped talking to us.

The judge has often said that she is only “one of five” and perhaps we all need to stop looking to her for leadership.

By failing to meet the responsibilities of the office that she holds, she has marginalized the office itself.

We recognize she is new to the office and political debate. Though we've been critical in some editorials of some of her early work, our door, phone and email remain open to her to inform our readers of her reasoning and positions. The Countywide is not a state-run publication. We reserve the right to disagree with elected officials, but we are also committed to delivering all sides of an issue.
