AUSTIN – The Texas Transportation Commission has approved a total of $26.1 million for three projects in Goliad, Karnes and Live Oak counties that will add passing lanes, rehabilitate roadways and improve intersections.

Hunter Industries, Ltd. was awarded the projects.

“As Texas roadways become increasingly crowded, we must find ways to relieve congestion without compromising safety,” said Phil Wilson, TxDOT executive director. “Keeping travelers moving safely and efficiently will continue to be an ongoing priority as Texas welcomes nearly 1,000 newcomers each day.”

“In a state as vast as Texas, it’s imperative to not only have reliable roadways connecting our rural and urban citizens, but also to be diligent in designing and maintaining them with safety in mind. Keeping everyone safe on the road is our first priority. We must do everything we can to get the driving public safely to their destinations and home to their families at the end of the day," Texas Transportation Commissioner Fred Underwood said.

The projects include:

• State Highway 72 from U.S. Highway 181 in Kenedy, approximately 11 miles southwest to the Bee County line. The $16.7 million project will rehabilitate the roadway and add two-mile sections of passing lanes on alternating sides of the road. Construction is expected to begin by fall and be completed by winter 2014.

• Pavement improvement on U.S. 181 from Karnes City to Kenedy and improving intersections at various locations in Goliad and Karnes counties by strengthening the base, widening and overlaying with hot mix.
