The A.C. Jones junior varsity boys basketball team competed at the Nordheim varsity tournament and earned a 2-1 record that led them to the consolation bracket title.

The two wins raise the Trojans’ season record to 5-2.

The young Trojans were up against varsity teams from the surrounding area’s smaller high schools. The Trojans met the Runge Yellowjackets in the first round and the game played out to a defensive struggle. The Yellowjackets prevailed 38-33.

The Trojans owned a 23-14 advantage at the half but a cold shooting spell in the second half allowed the Yellowjackets back into the contest. Beeville missed 14 free throws in the second half and that also contributed to the loss.

“The Trojans played aggressively the entire game, but fell short in the scoring column,” said JV coach Abel Barrera.

Chet Sparks led the Trojan scoring attack with 10 points. Jared Carrillo and Nick Waters followed with six points. Jeffery Stafford hit for four while Joe Arzola had three markers. Jon Silva added two points as did Matt Garcia.

The next game had the Trojans facing the Victoria Crossroads Academy varsity. The Beeville boys played well and earned a 52-41 win over VCA.

“It was a total team effort on ensuring a win for the Trojans,” Barrera said.

Sebastian Rodriguez led the Beeville scoring with 10 points. Sparks followed with eight points and led the team in rebounding. Waters had six points as did Zachary Castro and Silva. Kevin Dang added five and Stafford hit for four. Carrillo had three points while Arzola and Garcia came in with two tallies apiece.

The victory put the Trojans into the consolation bracket finals against the Pettus Eagle varsity.

The tilt was close, but the Trojans edged the Eagles by four, 46-42, to take home the trophy.

“With each passing game, I have seen a determination of a team which is willing to put in the work to improve at becoming a competitive basketball team,” said Barrera.

Sparks led the team in scoring with 12 points. Rodriguez followed with eight while Stafford and Garcia both sank six. Waters added five points in the win. Carrillo hit for four points. Yi Zhou had three markers and Silva contributed two.

Waters, although not the leading Beeville scorer, was named to the all-tournament team for his overall fine play on defense, rebounding, consistent scoring and team play.

The Trojans hosted Tuloso-Midway on Monday night. Their Friday night encounter with Mathis will be at the Pirates’ den with the freshman contest getting things started at 5 p.m.
