The intensive summer program at Coastal Bend College is in its third summer, thanks to a two-year TEA grant renewed after confirmation that the first two years went well.

By participating in the program, students can earn both high school and college credits.

“If they complete two years, they can receive a certificate,” said Dee Dee Bernal, project manager.

This summer, the program has 115 students who range between the eighth and 12th grades. They come from Beeville and the surrounding areas.

The classes are mostly business management related, but there are also technology and leadership courses. They are taught by both college and high school teachers.

The students will go on two field trips. The first will be to San Antonio’s Witte Museum and IMAX Theatre.

The second field trip will be to the Texas State Aquarium in Corpus Christi.

The program also offers TAKS tutorials. Additionally, before entering the program, all students take the Accuplacer college entrance exam, which determines whether remedial courses are needed.

The classes include unusual topics such as robotics and other types of innovative technology.

“Last year, the students had a great time,” said Bernal. “They enjoy going to the college and participating in the classes.”

The program continues through the end of June and will be offered next summer as well.
