The Trojan varsity boys basketball team gained experience over the weekend, but did not gain a victory at the South San tournament.

The Beeville boys played hard against four tough foes, but came up just short of gaining their second win of the season. The Trojans stand at 1-6 on the year.

“We are doing a good job of playing hard, we just haven’t put together a complete game. I feel confident that we will piece this puzzle together,” said Trojan head coach Jesse Baez.

“The kids are working hard and everything will fall into place.”

Thursday’s opening round contest was against the McCollum Cowboys. The teams both had good first quarters, each hitting for 16 points in the first eight minutes. The defenses and some cold shooting woes then took over. The Trojans scored four points in the second period while the Cowboys roped in 11 more to earn a 27-20 halftime lead.

McCollum added two more points to their lead in the third period to take a 36-27 advantage. The Trojans picked up the defensive pressure and held the Cowboys to just two points in the fourth. The Trojans fell just short, recording eight in the fourth to let the Cowboys escape with a 38-35 victory.

Thomas Camacho led the Trojans with 12 points and Jordan Gonzales and Eric Soza both contributed eight. Johnny Dang followed with five tallies and Ysrael Barboza had two to complete the Trojan scoring. Felix Ruiz led the Cowboy scoring with 12 points.

Friday had the Trojans playing two contests. Floresville and the Seagoville Dragons provided the competition.

The Floresville Tigers used a tough defense and a solid offensive attack to outscore the Trojans in all four quarters, but not by much. The Tigers were in front by four, 15-11, at the end of one and owned a 25-20 lead at the half. It was 38-31 going into the fourth period. The Trojans were hanging tough but could not get an offensive spark to gain some momentum. The Tigers took the final stanza 17-14 to earn a 55-45 victory.

Camacho had 13 points for the Trojans and Gonzales sank 12. Soza followed with eight. Barboza and Robby Horton recorded four each. Dang and Vinny Garza had two each.

The Dragons’ early defensive pressure was the key to the game against Seagoville. The Dragons pressed and kept the Trojans at bay for the first three quarters. It was a 54-23 contest going into the final quarter. The Trojans poured in 20 points in the fourth while Seagoville closed with 15 tallies. The final was all Dragons at 69-43.

Beeville got 12 points from Soza to lead their scoring. Camacho and Gonzales each hit for six points. Dang, Barboza and Horton contributed four apiece. Adam Garcia added three points and Garza had two.

Saturday’s contest was with 29-5A Eagle Pass. The Eagles raced out to a 17-10 first quarter advantage, but the Trojans cut four points off that lead by taking the second period 14-10. The third quarter was the difference as the Trojans came out of the locker room cold. The Eagles hit for 15 in the third while the Trojans managed just seven. That made it an uphill battle in the fourth quarter for the Trojans, trailing 42-31. Both teams hit for 15 markers in the final stanza to make the final a 57-46 win for the Eagles.

Soza and Dang led the Beeville scoring attack with 12 apiece. Barboza followed with nine. Camacho and Gonzales were held to five each. Garza added four to complete the Beeville scoring.

The Trojans hosted the Sinton Pirates on Tuesday night and will be back on the tournament trail this weekend at the San Antonio Memorial tournament that begins play on Thursday and runs through Saturday.
