The Trojan basketball teams were in Alice on Tuesday evening and the JHS boys swept all three games. The varsity contest went down to the wire but the Beeville boys edged the Coyotes 58-57 to get their first win of the season.

Beeville’s varsity record now stands at 1-2 on the young season.

“We did a good job of playing hard for 4 quarters. We did a good job of executing at the end of the game,” said Trojan head coach Jesse Baez.

The Trojans were up by five, 13-8, at the end of the first period. The shooting warmed up in the second quarter for both squads as the Trojans hit for 18 in the second quarter and the Coyotes recorded 19. The Trojans owned a four-point advantage at 31-27 going into the half.

The Coyotes continued their hot shooting in the third period, hitting for another 19 points. The Trojans added 15 but that evened things out at 46-46 going into the final quarter. The teams went back and forth but the Trojans got the one extra point that was needed in the 12-11 final stanza to edge the Alice Coyotes for Beeville’s first win of the year.

This game also marked the first game that head coach Jesse Baez has had a full squad of Trojans. With the football season over, the varsity team picked up five additional players to add depth and experience to the Trojan hoop squad.

Three Trojans were in double figures. Johnny Dang and Jordan Gonzales each hit for 12 points in the win. Eric Soza followed with 11 in his first game of the season. Thomas Camacho and Keanu Gutierrez both recorded seven points on the night. Ysrael Barboza added four. Derell Jackson contributed three and Robby Horton went inside for two to complete the Beeville scoring.

“I thought our kids responded well for this being the first game with the full squad together. The first game with our full squad is always interesting trying come up with new combinations and keeping a flow in the game,” Baez said.

The Trojans are competing at the South San tourney this weekend but will be back on their home court on Tuesday night, entertaining the Sinton Pirates.

The junior varsity tilt went to the Beeville boys 35-23 and the freshmen also scored a win with a 33-27 decision over the young Coyotes.

In the JV contest, the Trojans were led by Chet Saprks with ten points. Matt Gargia hit for eight in the win. Sebastian Rodriguez added six tallies and Johnny Hernandez hit for four points. Joe Arzola came in with three markers and the duo of Kevin Dang and Felix Morales contributed with two each.

“I was quite impressed with the total team effort on both the offensive and defensive sides of the court. The defense held Alice to only five first half points, and those points were all on free throws,” said JV coach Abel Barerra.

The freshman got 12 points from Connor Shears and ten from John Camacho to lead the Beeville boys in the win.

“Our defense was good all night and everyone contributed on offense to make it a complete team effort,” said freshman Trojan coach Scott Olivo.

Both the freshman and JV squads will be on their home court on Tuesday to face the Sinton Pirates. The ninth-grade game will tip off at 5 p.m.
