The Port Lavaca Sandcrabs made their way to Beeville on Friday night and worked over the Trojan varsity basketball team for a 61-36 victory.

It was a strong second half performance by the visitors that did in the Trojans. The pace of the first two periods was slow, very slow. Neither team could buy a basket but the defenses played pretty well. Calhoun led 13-8 after the first period and it was a 21-16 contest at the half.

“We were able to hold Port Lavaca to 21 points the first half, but we had too many defensive breakdowns and hit a dry spell on offense the second half,” said Trojan head coach Abel Barrera.

“I was impressed with our team’s constant pressure on PL the first half, but it didn’t go our way the second half.”

Calhoun came out in the third period and took advantage of the Beeville turnovers and began to dominate the boards. The Trojans continued to struggle shooting the ball. The Sandcrabs hustled for 19 third quarter points while holding the Trojans to seven.

The Calhoun lead stretched to 40-23 going into the final quarter and the visitors captured the fourth quarter 21-13 to trounce JHS.

The Trojans were led by the 16 points from Keanu Gutierrez. Jeffery Stafford added five markers. Adam Garcia and Ryan Vasquez both had four in the loss. Dakota Del Bosque hit one three-pointer. Chet Sparks and Nick Waters each contributed two.

“Keanu Gutierrez has been providing us with a scoring lift on offense, and Chet Sparks and Conner Shears helped out with grabbing rebounds. We are having some success in the games, but we just need to be more consistent as the games go on,” Barrera said.

“We will continue to work harder in practice and we will try to get a district win against Rockport Tuesday night.”

Beeville played in Rockport on Tuesday night against the Pirates. This Friday, the Beeville boys will be back at home to meet the visiting Moody Trojans.

Next Tuesday evening the Ray Texans will be in Beeville.
