An untimely turnover can cause problems on the basketball floor. The Trojans and Miller Bucs were locked up in an overtime tilt on Tuesday night in Corpus Christi and a Beeville turnover and a net-ripping three-pointer from the Bucs finally gave the home team a 58-56 overtime win.

The Beeville boys played well, according to coach Abel Barrera, but did not get the breaks down the stretch of the extra period. Miller took a 16-13 lead after one quarter and that three-point margin held up through the halftime break as the scoreboard read 23-20 at the intermission with the Bucs still out front.

The Trojans outscored the Bucs 16-11 over the third period to grab a two-point advantage at 36-34.

Miller fought back and captured the fourth period 15-13 to send the game into the extra five minutes. The overtime period was as close as the rest of the ball game as the teams picked up their defensive play. Miller hit for nine markers in the extra period while the Trojans managed seven.

“We’ve cut way down on our turnovers, but had one tonight that was at a crucial time. The guys are playing hard but we made the mistake and a few shots late did not fall,” Barrera said.

The Trojans placed three players in double figures with Ryan Vasquez leading with 16 points. Keanu Gutierrez followed with 12 markers and Nick Waters finished the night with 11.

Jeffery Stafford added seven points and Chet Sparks worked inside for six tallies. Adam Garcia completed the scoring with four.

The loss gets the Trojans off to a 0-1 start in District 30-4A competition.

The Trojans played host to Port Lavaca Calhoun on Friday night but will be back on the road for a Tuesday night encounter with Rockport-Fulton.

The Moody Trojans visit Beeville next Friday night.
