Some cold shooting and too many turnovers spell disaster for a basketball team.

The Lady Trojans found that out for themselves on Tuesday night as they fell to the host Ray Lady Texans, 48-28, in the district opener for both teams.

The Lady Trojans hit just 16 percent from the field and made only seven of 16 attempts from the charity stripe for a cold-shooting night. The Lady Trojans also needed to take better care of the ball, committing 26 turnovers that helped the Lady Texans to some easy baskets.

Ray bolted out to an 18-4 lead after the first quarter and upped that to 29-11 at the half. The Lady Trojans scored just four points in the third quarter and trailed 42-15.

The Beeville girls outscored the Texans in the final period by 13-6, but it was not nearly enough to make much of a dent in the deficit.

“The seasoned Ray Lady Texans set a game tempo that our hometown girls could not match for 32 minutes,” said Lady Trojan head coach Chuck Youngblood.

Victoria Elizalde led the Beeville scoring with 16 points. Alisa Patterson finished with seven.

“Patterson stepped her game way up, playing exceptional defense and producing a season-high seven points,” Youngblood said.

Theresa Amador, Randi Maupin and Anyssa Barbosa played strong on the boards pulling down nine, eight and five rebounds, respectively.

“The young Lady Trojan team continues to work hard and is getting better with every practice,” Youngblood said.

The Lady Trojans played the Gregory-Portland Ladycats last night (Friday) in their district home-opener. The varsity contest was to start at about 8 p.m.
