UVALDE – It was relatively over at the half, as the two teams traded second half baskets and the Coastal Bend College Cougar women’s basketball team dominated early for a 70-56 victory over the Southwest Texas Junior College Cowgirls on Saturday.

The win was the third of the season for the struggling, but improving Cougars in their inaugural season of play in the highly competitive NJCAA Division I play.

The Cougars hit for 35 first half points while holding the Cowgirls in check with only 21 markers. Deizarae McCoy led the first half scoring attack with 11 points and had a good deal of help from Brianna Williams who recorded nine tallies.

In the second half, the two teams equally split the 70 points that were scored to make the final an easy 70-56 victory for the visitors.

“I knew their coach would make adjustments. It was a good thing we implemented another offensive set for their tough zone,” said Cougar head coach April Bruene.

“We only got in one practice on the new set, but the girls implemented it very well.”

Four Cougars wound up in double figures. McCoy finished with a team-high 17 points in the victory. An’Jonae added 13 points. Jeselle Ramirez hit for 11, and Williams added one free throw in the second half for 10 points on the afternoon.

The Cougars’ next scheduled home game is set for Feb. 22 when Victoria College returns to Beeville.
