FREER – The young Skidmore-Tynan Bobcat varsity basketball team kept plugging away and played one of their better games of the year to notch their first district win of the season on Friday night.

“The freshman play has been improving every game and the senior leadership has been outstanding. The hard work at practice is finally starting to show on the court,” said head coach Bruce Kimball.

It was close the entire way with the ’Cats holding a slim 9-8 lead at the end of the first period. The two squads were all knotted, 16-16 at the half in the conservatively played contest.

Freer managed to edge in front of the Bobcats by the end of the third quarter, but it was just by one point, and the S-T boys were still in the game. The Bobcats had their best quarter, saving the best for last. The S-T boys held the Freer squad to 11 points over the final eight minutes while scoring 16 points, to overtake the Buckaroos for the 48-44 victory.

Two Bobcats reached double figures. Bryan Shaw led the way with 16 points in the win, and Aaron Hughes followed with a solid 14 markers. James Rodriguez hit for six points for the ’Cats. Marcus Sarate followed with four. Seth Phillips and Ryan Lakso each sank three points. Dylan Scott added two.

The Bobcats hosted the Odem Owls on Tuesday night and will travel to Mathis on Friday evening to play the Pirates.

The JV boys did not play on Friday night.
