PETTUS – The Eagles used a balanced scoring attack, good rebounding and a sharp eye from the charity stripe to defeat the visiting Kenedy Lions on Friday night, 68-64.

“We played a very disciplined game for four quarters Friday. Rebounding and free throws improved and were key in the victory,” said Eagle head coach Ernesto Gonzales.

“As a team the boys were 26 of 34 from the charity stripe.”

The Eagle varsity jumped out to lead by five, 18-13, as the first period closed. The five-point advantage grew to six, 30-24, by the halftime buzzer.

The Eagles added another three points to their lead in the third quarter to take a 47-38 lead. The Lions rallied but could not make the big jump to lead as the Eagles earned a 68-64 contest.

The Eagles had four players in double figures with Matthew Gonzales leading the way with 22 points in the win. Dylan Dunn hit for 14 markers while Anthony Mendoza recorded 13. CJ Cruz ended the night with 11. Diego Delgado added five markers and Justin Chandler recorded three.

The victory was the first district win for the Eagles, which now stand at 1-4.

The Eagles were on the road in Runge on Tuesday night and will host Yorktown on Friday night.
