Eric thought he was going to be attending Stevens High School to speak to the school’s student athletes on the importance of balancing academics with athletics; what he didn’t know is that he was also being honored for his good works in the community.
Following Soza’s talk to the students, UTSA Associate Athletics Communications Director Brian Hernandez informed the room that Allstate had something else in store for Soza and invited local Allstate agency owner, Ralph Pena, to the stage.
Pena spoke of Soza’s many accomplishments and his impact on the San Antonio community, before congratulating him on his election to the 2013 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team and presenting him with his trophy.
UTSA head football coach Larry Coker and UTSA offensive coordinator Kevin Brown were both in attendance at the ceremony to help recognize one of their own student-athletes.
Soza will be invited to attend the Allstate Sugar Bowl in New Orleans in January where he will be honored at halftime on the field as well as take part in a community service event with the 21 other members of the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team.
Beeville residents and sports fans are encouraged to vote for Eric for team captain. All they have to do is go to ESPN.com and search “Good Works.” There, they can read more about Eric’s volunteer work, as well as other members of the team, and vote for Eric as team captain. Voting ends Nov. 11 and the winner will be announced during the Home Depot ESPNU College Football Awards in December.
