CORPUS CHRISTI – On Saturday, the Trojan cross country teams ran in their final tune-up meet before the District 30-4A meet in Beeville the morning of Oct. 25. The Miller Invitational was run at West Guth Park, and the Lady Trojan varsity team placed fourth overall with another good showing by the young group of runners.

“We had a good run on Saturday. Everyone who ran had a chance to see where they are at before heading into district, and it looks promising,” said Trojan head coach Linda Luna.

The meet also had senior Lady Trojan Kennedy Trevino running in competition for the first time this season. Three freshman, one sophomore and Trevino made up the top five Lady Trojan finishers at this meet.

Natalie Rivas finished seventh overall with a time of 21:02 for the three-mile course. Emilie Bozant was in 14th overall at 21:30. Julissa Ortiz placed 28th in 22:28. Maria Navarro finished 31st with a time of 22:38, and Trevino returned to the cross country wars with a time of 22:38, good for 32nd to complete the A.C. Jones top five.

Raelynn Arrisola placed 39th in 22:52, and Tiffany Vargas finished 62nd in the big field with a time of 24:01.

Two Beeville girls ran in the JV division with Cameron Posada placing 52nd in 16:19 over a shorter course. Roxanne Saldana finished 104th in 17:50.

The Trojan squad was led by freshman Derrick Carroll, who placed 17th at the meet in 17:08 for his three-mile trip. Elias Guzman was right with him and finished a step behind Carroll in 18th place in 17:09. Bryce Koenig crossed the finish line in 34th at 17:37. Alfredo Rodriguez placed 41st with a time of 17:46, and Mauricio Solis was 146th in 21:40.

JV boys running at the meet included Brent Koenig (11th-19:31), Daniel Chavez (40th-21:32) and Mark Valdez (83rd-25:55).

“We have one more week of solid, good practice before we have to taper down to keep the legs fresh,” Luna said.

The physical part of the cross country events does not really concern Luna.

“It’s the mental part of running for both our varsity teams, because we are young. Five out of the seven girls are new to varsity this year. The boys’ team is not as young, but we only have one returning letterman from last year,” she said.

The Trojan runners will not compete this Saturday but have begun a week of practice that will slow down approaching the Oct. 25 district meet at Veterans Memorial Park.
