Beeville VFW Post 9170 and Ladies Auxiliary will hold an open house and short ceremony, starting at 5 p.m. in the post home, honoring our first responders (law enforcement officers, firefighters and EMTs).
The public is invited to come and recognize the first responders who serve our community every day.
Also, Thomas Jefferson Intermediate School hosted its annual eighth annual “America Supports You” Freedom Walk this morning and other patriotic groups set out tiny American flags at the courthouse grounds.
Turning our attention from that solemn day to the weekend’s colorful cultural celebration, some congratulations are in order...
Sharing the spotlight at the 2013 Diez y Seis Fiesta festivities are: Angelika Benavidez – Miss Diez y Seis; Susie Harrison – Jr. Miss; and Sonrysa Guzman – Little Miss. They won their crowns in last Saturday’s pageant.
In addition, we salute County Commissioner Eloy Rodriguez, a decorated Vietnam veteran, who has been named the parade marshal. The theme for this year’s parade, which starts at 10:30 a.m. Saturday downtown, is “In Honor of Our Veterans.”
Among other highlights is a performance Friday evening at the Expo Center featuring Mariachi Los Soberanos from San Antonio, starting at 7:30 p.m.
Saturday’s events include a 5K walk/ run downtown; men’s 40 and older softball tournament at Veterans Memorial Park; and disc golf tournament, also at the park. At the Expo Center, “El Grito” will be heard at noon, followed by kids games, Texas wrestling and tamale eating and jalapeno eating contests.
Performers at the Expo Center will include Luz Garza y Su Conjunto at 1 p.m.; Grupo Intimo at 3; Indomable at 5; Ricky Naranjo y Los Gamblers at 8:30; and headliners Jaime y Los Chamacos at 11 o’clock.
Our thanks to Fred Morón, all the Fiesta organizers and sponsors for providing this entertainment for the entire community.
