SKIDMORE – Both the freshman and junior varsity S-T volleyball teams upped their records to 5-2 on the year with Tuesday’s victories over visiting Pettus.

The freshman girls dominated their Bee County rivals in two straight sets, 25-9 and 25-4, to capture the win in the best of three match.

Stephanie Nevarez served for seven straight points to help get the victory in set two. Felicia Ortiz was the defensive leader for the young Lady Cats.

“She is a leader by example both on and off the court,” said freshman coach Catherine Stowe.

Brianna Olivarez also drew praise from her coach as a vocal leader of the team.

“It’s out of her comfort zone, but it’s what the team needs,” Stowe said.

“The team looked whole tonight. Every girls is learning her role on the team, whether it be serving, setting or passing. They’ve improved greatly.”

The JV match was closer but the host Lady Cats earned the victory in two straight sets, 25-12 and 25-20.

Whitley Rix served for a combined 10 points in the sets. Amber Gutierrez served for seven total points. The JV girls also got strong performances from Kati Stroman, Samantha More, Debra Wilder, Sarah Colle and Alyssa Alanis, according to coach Holly Vasquez.

The Lady Cat sub-varsity teams will hit the court again on Tuesday night when they host the Three Rivers Bulldogs. Play begins at 5 p.m.
