Romans 2:1-4 is a strong message from Paul that each person should look earnestly at his or her own conduct, rather than judge others: “You, therefore, have no excuse, you who pass judgment on someone else, for at whatever point you judge the other, you are condemning yourself, because you who pass judgment do the same things. Now we know that God's judgment against those who do such things is based on truth. So when you, a mere man, pass judgment on them and yet do the same things, do you think you will escape God's judgment? Or do you show contempt for the riches of His kindness, tolerance and patience, not realizing that God's kindness leads you toward repentance?”

Paul’s message was about God’s impartiality toward all men and nations, be they Jews or Gentiles. This message dealt a blow to religion that teaches rules, laws, and processes but misses God’s grace.

In the act of judging, people assume an attitude of pride and condemn others in an attempt to look less guilty themselves. Filled with arrogance, they try to lift themselves up to God’s righteousness, but rapidly fall into sin. Although not everyone commits the same sins, all people sin. By judging and criticizing, we break the moral law of God.

Holiness is the essential moral nature of God. Because He is absolutely holy, He hates sin. In Leviticus 11:44, He tells us, “I am the LORD your God; consecrate yourselves and be holy, because I am holy.”

To be holy means being free from all defilement and making our lives a living testimony. “This is the message we have heard from Him and declare to you: God is light; in Him there is no darkness at all. If we claim to have fellowship with Him yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live by the truth. But if we walk in the light, as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, His Son, purifies us from all sin.” (1 John 1:5-7)

Jesus Christ came to demonstrate the love of God by being man’s sacrifice for sin. When we accept Him as Lord and Savior, our responsibility is to be one with Him. We are to uphold His truth and let the Scriptures live out through us, by loving God first and loving others through Him. We are to search our own hearts and judge ourselves against Jesus Christ, not others.

Choate Baptist Church welcomes you to join us for Sunday School at 9:45 a.m., Sunday Morning Worship at 11 a.m., and Sunday Evening Worship at 7 p.m. We also meet on Wednesdays at 7 p.m. Brother Odom’s message can be heard on Radio KAML 990 AM each Sunday morning at 8:30.
