The Scriptures speak of God’s “breath” as the life-giving source to all humanity: “And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.” (Genesis 2:7) Through prophecy, the Old Testament speaks of God’s power manifested by His mighty deeds, through His Spirit empowering different individuals.
The Spirit is used uniquely as a tool of revelation to represent His holy purposes and His manifested mighty deeds. In Genesis 2:7, man was created as a living soul. In Luke 1:35, Jesus was created as the Holy Son. Both were actual creations of the Holy Spirit, a manifestation of the mighty power of God. In Exodus 19:16-25, the Lord God came down to Mount Sinai to meet with Moses. The Spirit of God manifested the very presence of God’s glory among His people.
God also sent His Spirit to determine between true and false prophets and the spirit by which they prophesied. Jesus did not prohibit acts of judging but commanded us to discern the spirits. (See Matthew 7:15)
The most mysterious manifestation was at Calvary, where the Son of God died as the sacrifice for the sin of humanity past, present, and future. God raised Him from the dead to die no more, but to sit at His right hand at His throne.
The great mystery of the New Testament is the working of God’s Spirit in the human soul. The Spirit gives the gift of faith to humanity. (See 1 Corinthians 12:9) For everyone who trusts Jesus as Lord and Savior, this infuses new life – a life of living for Jesus Christ. God’s Spirit empowers us to desire to do what is good, moral, and right, as we live in faith, developing His character of love.
