GEORGE WEST – The Beeville Major boys kept their perfect record in the postseason intact with a 6-2 victory over the host George West Longhorns on Monday night.

The Beeville boys used the same recipe for success of good pitching and even better hitting to power their way over the young ’Horns.

Beeville scored two runs in the first as Anthony Pena and Derek Castillo both scored. Pena reached on a leadoff single and Castillo followed one out later with a single of his own that scored Pena. Castillo was then brought home on a double off the bat of Edward Valdez Jr.

It was 2-0 after one inning.

The Beeville bats again exploded in the third with three big runs crossing the plate on a three-run home run by Seth Gomez. Lauro Garcia Jr. and Castillo scored in front of Gomez.

That made it a 5-0 contest heading into the fourth. Beeville added another run in the fourth with Garcia scoring after stroking a double. Castillo got the RBI with another single. The scoreboard had it at 6-0 entering the fifth inning.

The GW boys scored two runs in the fifth on a couple of Beeville errors and base hits but that was it. The Longhorns went scoreless and down in order in the sixth as the Beeville boys captured the 6-2 victory.

Pablo Salinas opened on the mound for Beeville and pitched two innings. Gomez relieved him to keep his pitch count under 35 pitches and thus available with just one day’s rest. Gomez threw just 30 pitches in his one inning of work. Pena worked on the hill in the fourth and fifth frames, using 35 pitches to stay ready for the local boys. Valdez mopped things up in the sixth, taking just 12 pitches to record the final three outs.

“The boys played well defensively with only two errors, but those errors allowed two runs. The boys need to get more disciplined at the plate,” said coach Dela Castillo.

“We had a total of 14 strikeouts in this game, which is not going to help us get far in playoffs if we don’t get it corrected.”

The Major All-Stars play tonight at 8 o’clock in the third round of their postseason tourney. The Beeville boys will face off against Odem, and the young Owls are also undefeated.
