Members of the Karnes City Home and Garden Club gathered for a spring time luncheon at Barth’s Restaurant Thursday, May 16. The scene was crisp, white tablecloths placed on the tables adorned with 3 large fresh flower arrangements in shades of dark pink, white, yellow and light pink.

Mary Louise Jonas led the induction of new officers for year 2013-2014: President Gladys Janysek; Vice President and Secretary Marlane Smith and Treasurer Johnie Hall.

Following the luncheon, President Gladys Janysek held a brief meeting. She gave all members a copy of “Tips for Everyday Life”. Two of the tips were: to prevent rust from forming on a cast iron pan, simply place a coffee filter at the bottom to absorb moisture and de-grease your clothes by simply adding one can of soda water to the regular washing of them.

Continuing with the upkeep of our town’s Memorial Gardens, the members, along with Jeff Quintero, assisted by Johnie Hall, Mary Louise Jonas and Edna Pawelek, have all contributed their time and efforts through out the year to help keep the gardens clean, nurtured and attractive. The Boys Scouts have also pledged to help work with us on this worthy project.

Anyone interested in joining the Home and Garden Club can call Gladys Janysek at 830-780-2483. Beginning in September, meetings are usually held the third Thursday of the month with guest speakers lined up for some of the meetings, including “Quilting ideas and knowledge” for one of the fall meetings.

Garden Tip: Use coffee filters to store seeds. Fill them up and label them, store them in your refrigerator. The filter will keep your seeds dry.
