BEEVILLE – It was a close softball contest on Friday night, but the visiting Calhoun Sandies kicked some sand late and scored four runs in the seventh to pull away from the varsity Lady Trojans for an 11-5 victory.

“We fell behind early but battled back to make it a game late. There is a lot of fight left in our team in spite of our record,” said Lady Trojan head coach Jose Flores.

Both teams scored single runs in the first frame, but the Lady Trojans pushed across another run in the second inning to grab a 2-1 lead.

The Port Lavaca girls came right back to tie the game with two runs of their own in the third to make it a 3-2 score.

The visitors pounded the ball in the fourth inning for three big runs to take a 6-2 lead. A single run in the fifth added to their margin for a 7-2 advantage with the innings winding down.

The Lady Trojans fought back in the home half of the sixth with three runs to trail by two at 7-5 entering the final inning. The Sandies struck for four runs in the top of the seventh and the Lady Trojans could not answer.

The Beeville girls rapped out eight hits on the night. Rebecca De Los Santos went 2-3 in the game with one run scored and two RBIs. Eddika Ortega was 1-2 with two runs batted in. Krystal Cuellar had a good night at the plate with three hits in four official trips and one RBI. Andrea Briseno and Alyssa Bates each collected one hit in three trips.

Theresa Amador pitched the entire game for the Lady Trojans and gave up 16 hits and eight earned runs on the night. Amador walked three and struck out four Sandies over the seven innings.

The Lady Trojans travel to Calallen on Tuesday night and will host Tuloso-Midway on Friday night in the season finale.
