The GW bats pounded the S-T offerings for six first inning runs to leap out to a big early lead over the S-T girls. It was still 6-0 going into the top of the fourth as the S-T pitching settled down.
The Lady Cats scored a single run in the fourth and added one final run in the fifth. The GW girls scored twice in the bottom of the fourth, a single run in the fifth and then closed out the contest with a three-run explosion in the sixth to win by 10 runs.
“Our outfielders, Ariel Garcia, Brittany Herrera and Mari Martinez, made some crucial catches to keep the Horns from scoring anymore runs,” said head coach Ophelia De Los Santos.
Dominique Vera was in the circle for the Lady Cats with Adrianna Arredondo behind the plate.
“Unfortunately, we were unable to take advantage of multiple walks and wild pitches from the GW pitcher as we left several runners stranded with bases loaded multiple times,” said De Los Santos.
“Although we made contact with the ball, it just was not enough to get it through the infield and score some runs.”
Dolores Hinojosa went 1-4 at the plate. Vera had one hit in three trips. Brittany Herrera reached base twice after being hit by a pitch and scored one of the S-T runs. Alex Herrera was also hit by a pitch and contributed one base hit and one run. Mari Martinez collected one hit in two trips plus a walk.
The Lady Cats played host to Odem on Friday and then will travel to San Diego to meet the Lady Vaqueros on Tuesday evening.
