Those interested in exhibiting a sheep, goat or pig at the 2013 state fair, call the Goliad County Extension Office to place a tag order.

The cost of this year’s tags will be $8. The deadline to order tags will be Friday, April 12.

2013 horse validation

The 2013 horse validation will be Wednesday, May 1.

Cost will be $10 per horse.

Validation and payment is required of all horses to be shown, regardless if they were entered this year or last.

Instructions and all necessary forms are available and include steps for validating new horses and for reactivating horses entered last year.

2013 horsemanship school

The 2013 horsemanship school will be held on Sunday, June 16 and Monday, June 17 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Bee County Expo Center arena.

The program is only for 4-H Club members and provides education on horse safety, general riding practices, equipment and problem solving and how to improve overall confidence and ability when working with horses.

Teri Antilley, Extension horse program specialist in the Department of Animal Science, runs the summer horsemanship school Program and said, in addition to providing a structured horsemanship education, the program offers much more.

Participants work for eight hours a day and cover specific topics as safety, types of reins, horse theft awareness and bits, stopping and backing, rollbacks and turnarounds, gaits and leads, speed control, simple lead changes and flying lead changes, showmanship and ground safety.

Cost is $50 per person. For information, call Kathy Ball or Matt Bochat at 361-362-3280.

Ambassador short courses

The Texas 4-H Livestock Ambassador program strives to provide high school aged 4-H members the opportunity to develop and practice advanced leadership skills related to mentoring other youth, and to become advocates for animal agriculture.

It will offer a short program July 15-18 at Texas A&M in College Station. Cost will be $200.

Another program will be offered at Texas Tech University in Lubbock on July 22-24. Cost for that program will be $150.
