Jones High netters shine at Kingsville’s ‘Super 8 Shootout’

KINGSVILLE – Trojan Eric Dehnert kept his championship streak going as he won his fifth consecutive tennis tournament in Kingsville last Thursday.

Dehnert went 3-0 in the tournament, defeating Juan Rios (Kingsville) in the finals, 6-2, 6-3. Dehnert has five championships to go along with one second place this spring and should be the favorite going into next week’s district tournament.

Lady Trojan Cori Moore placed second at Kingsville, going 3-1 in the tournament. Moore lost a tough finals match against No. 1 seed Kristen McGehee (Falfurrias), 7-6, 6-1. Moore has two first place finishes to go along with two second place this spring. Moore should be one of the top four seeds in the district tournament.

Graham Traylor and Emily Barris won the consolation finals against teammates Lucas Guerrero and Karla Martinez in mixed doubles. Barris and Traylor defeated Guerrero and Martinez, 8-0, in the finals. Traylor and Barris were 3-1 in the tournament while Guerrero and Martinez went 2-2.

Trojans Roberto Reyna and Colton Wren went 1-1 in boys doubles. They won their first match against Falfurrias, 8-0, but fell to Victoria West in the next round.

Other Trojans competing in the tournament include: Tyler Stewart 1-1, Samantha Ramon, Cori Sparks and Paige McKinney

The Trojans’ next tournament is the district tournament being held April 8-9 at Tuloso-Midway High School. The freshman-JV district tournament will be held Friday, April 5, at T-M.
