The position was left vacant when Judge Sylvia Valdez resigned in July to continue her college education.
The commissioners court studied the possibility of consolidating the Precinct 1 and 2 positions in an effort to cut costs. Precinct 2 Justice of the Peace Steve Kennedy has assumed Valdez's duties and will do so until a replacement is elected.
