The Tri-County Commercial Female Sale on April 13 was an obvious seller’s market with coalescing weather conditions.

Two hundred-ninety head were consigned and sold from Bee, Goliad, Refugio and the surrounding counties for almost a half a million dollars.

This year, with our pre-existing drought conditions and lack of cattle in our local region, as a result of liquidation and destocking situations, the committee also sought cattle from outside the area to offer our ranchers quality cattle.

David Richards auctioneered the sale and the volume buyers included Boeing Brothers of Woodsboro; Brooks Ranch of Corpus Christi; Ray Brown of Mathis; Frank Helvely of Pearsall; Lloyd Mingers of Mathis; and Whitwll Ranches of Cotulla.

Buyers paid, on average: Pairs $1,648.04 on 83 head; breds $1,311.87 on 67 head; and open or exposed heifers, $1,176.33 on 139 head.

The female sale is committed to the youth in the Tri-County area and again plans to make a $1,000 donation to each county 4-H program as it did last year, which totals almost $20,000.

Bob Gayle, who engineered the idea of the sale more than nine years ago, said, “I think it is a ‘win-win’ for everyone involved. Not only are producers profiting from the added dollars, but they can also feel assured that they are helping the youth when they consign.”

The sale was sponsored by Ag Med Supply, Beeville Livestock Commission, Silveus Rangeland Insurance, and Lyssy and Eckel Feeds.

The committee men, who covered all the groundwork, included Jim Bluntzer, Matt Bochat, Rodney Butler, Pat Calhoun, Michael Donalson, Leo Casas, Bob Gayle, Clay Neel and Brian Yanta.
